Extent of Application of Risk Management Practices in China’s Agricultural Industry: Regional and Product-Based Differences

Abstract

This study assesses the extent to which risk management practices are applied across five dimensions in China’s agricultural industry, whether application differs by geographical region and by agricultural product category, and what constrains further improvement. Three hundred producers completed a 25-item questionnaire scored on a four-point Likert scale, and ten took part in semi-structured interviews. Weighted means and one-way analysis of variance were used. All five dimension means fell within the applied range of the scale, from 2.74 for identification to 3.07 for governance, and none reached the fully applied level. Regional grouping produced significant differences on four dimensions and product grouping on three, with measurement and assessment significant only across commodities and governance only across regions. Compliance with national policy was the highest rated of the 25 indicators (3.41) and evaluation of policy the lowest (2.41). Reported constraints concerned resource and capability rather than awareness.
